Afghan troop map: US and Nato deployments | |

In December 2009, President Barack Obama pledged to send an extra 30,000 US troops to Afghanistan. Six months later, the total number of US troops in the country is almost 100,000. The US is the largest contributing nation to the international force , whose numbers now total, more than 146,000. That figure is set to increase to 150,000 by August. The US currently has around 73,300 troops deployed with the Nato force in Afghanistan while an additional 26,500 are deployed as part of the US Operation Enduring Freedom, mainly in the East regional command. The UK currently contributes the second largest number of troops to the Afghan mission, with some 9,500 personnel. | |
